Starting therapy can feel like a big step. There’s no pressure to share everything straight away - therapy moves at a pace that feels safe, comfortable and manageable for you.
Sessions usually take place weekly, although this can be adjusted depending on your needs & the stage of therapy.
------------------------------------------How Therapy Often Unfolds
While every person’s experience is unique, therapy often unfolds in a few gentle stages.
Stage 1 - Understanding your ExperienceWe begin by exploring what has brought you to therapy and what life has been like for you. Together we develop a shared understanding of how your thoughts, emotions & experiences may be connected, helping us identify patterns that may be keeping things difficult.
Stage 2 - Beginning the Therapeutic WorkAs we gain a clearer understanding, we begin working more actively using approaches such as CBT, trauma-focused CBT or EMDR.
These approaches can help you process difficult experiences, develop practical tools & begin creating meaningful change. We regularly check in to ensure the pace feels right & the work remains aligned with your goals.
Stage 3 - Strengthening ProgressAs things begin to shift, we focus on strengthening the progress you’ve made & building confidence in new ways of responding to challenges.
Stage 4 - Looking AheadWhen the time feels right to bring therapy to a close, we reflect on the progress you’ve made & create a plan to help you maintain these changes & continue supporting your wellbeing moving forward.
-----------------------------------------Length of Therapy
CBT & EMDR are structured, evidence-based approaches designed to help you begin making meaningful changes within a focused period of time.
Many people begin to notice shifts within 8–20 sessions, although this can vary depending on your goals, experiences and the pace that feels right for you.
Some people prefer shorter, goal-focused therapy, while others value ongoing support to deepen their wellbeing & maintain the progress they’ve made. We can decide together what feels most helpful & review this as therapy progresses.
If longer-term support would be beneficial, we can create a plan that works for you - whether that involves monthly or occasional sessions to help you maintain your wellbeing & build on the progress you’ve made.
The focus is always on supporting you in a way that feels manageable, meaningful & aligned with what you hope to gain from therapy.
You don’t need to have everything figured out before starting - we can take the process step by step together.
